　Long-period variables are red giants that show light variability on time scales of several tens of days to hundreds of days. They comprise semi-regular and Mira variables, that can have variability amplitudes up to several magnitudes in the optical. In this seminar, I will review their properties, linking them with asymptotic giant branch stars, and present the first catalog of long-period variables released by the Gaia mission in its data release 2 in April 2018.
